Tutor Certification
The Scholar's Ascent Method
Official Training for the Peer-to-Peer Tutoring System
Welcome, Future Tutor!
This program is designed to give you the skills and confidence to be an outstanding tutor and leader. Complete all four modules and pass the final quiz with a score of 85% or higher to earn your official Tutor Certificate and start earning Tribe Points.
Module 1: Foundations of Peer Tutoring
Understand your role, act ethically, and build a positive connection with your tutee.
What Makes a Good Tutor
Your main goal is to be a "Guide on the Side," not a "Sage on the Stage." This means you help your tutee find the answers themselves by using active listening, patience, clear communication, and positive reinforcement.
Tutoring Ethics
Academic Integrity: Never do the work FOR your tutee. Your role is to help them understand so they can do it themselves.
Confidentiality: What you discuss in a session is private. Don't talk about your tutee's grades or struggles with other students.
Boundaries: Keep your relationship professional and focused on schoolwork.
Building Rapport
Start your first session with a quick icebreaker. Find common ground (like a favorite sport or video game) to create a comfortable environment where your tutee feels safe asking questions.
The "I Do, We Do, You Do" Method
This is your most powerful tool.
I Do: You solve a problem, explaining your steps.
We Do: Work on a problem together.
You Do: The tutee solves a problem on their own while you guide.
Module 2: Effective Teaching & Communication
Learn how to explain concepts clearly, keep your tutee engaged, and make sure they're really learning.
Breaking Down Complex Concepts
Use "chunking" to break big ideas into small pieces. Use analogies (e.g., "The mitochondria is like the power plant of the cell") and draw simple diagrams to make abstract concepts easier to grasp.
Engaging Your Peer
Make learning interactive. Turn vocabulary review into a quick game. Ask them to find a cool video on the topic. Celebrate small wins like, "Great job on that step!" to keep them motivated.
Checking for Understanding
Avoid asking "Do you get it?" Instead, ask open-ended questions like, "How would you explain that to a 5th grader?" or "Can you show me the first step?" Having them teach it back to you is the ultimate test of understanding.
Activity: Choose the Best Response
Your tutee gets a practice problem wrong and sighs, "I'm just bad at science."
Module 3: Science-Specific Tutoring Strategies
Master techniques for teaching 7th-grade science concepts in an engaging and effective way.
7th Grade Science Overview
You'll be covering Life Science (cells, ecosystems), Physical Science (atoms, energy, motion), and Earth Science (plate tectonics, weather). Remember to always connect back to the scientific method.
Making Science Engaging
Connect science to their daily life. Ask, "Where do you see energy transfer when you play basketball?" Use simple demonstrations—you don't need a full lab. Explaining a concept with a quick drawing is often enough.
Common Challenges and Solutions
Memorizing Vocabulary: Use flashcards or a matching game.
Understanding Processes: Draw a flowchart together showing the steps (e.g., photosynthesis).
Applying Formulas: Work through multiple examples using the "I Do, We Do, You Do" method.
Module 4: Safety & Procedures
Your safety and the program's integrity depend on following these critical rules.
Keep Communication at School
ALL communication and tutoring must happen at school, during school hours (like study hall). Never exchange personal phone numbers, social media handles, or personal emails. This rule is non-negotiable.
Public & Professional Spaces
All tutoring sessions must only happen in the pre-approved, supervised study hall area. No exceptions.
The #1 Rule: When in Doubt, Report It
If any conversation or situation makes you feel uncomfortable, confused, or worried, you must report it to the program coordinator or a teacher immediately. This is being a responsible leader.
Procedures for Tribe Points
Be on time and prepared. You must use the official paper log to sign in at the start of your session and sign out at the end. This is the only way we can track attendance and award your points!
