Public Speaking Tips
Master these skills to deliver your speech like a pro
Eye Contact
Look at different sections of the audience. Pick 3-4 friendly faces around the room and rotate your gaze between them. Never stare at the floor or ceiling.
Pacing & Pauses
Speak slightly slower than normal. Pause for 1-2 seconds after key points to let them sink in. Rushing makes you sound nervous; pausing makes you sound powerful.
Vocal Tone
Vary your volume and pitch. Get louder for big promises, softer for sincere moments. A monotone voice puts people to sleep; energy keeps them listening.
Body Language
Stand tall with feet shoulder-width apart. Use open hand gestures to emphasize points. Move with purpose, not nervously. Your body speaks as loud as your words.
Show Authenticity
Be yourself. The audience can tell when you are faking it. Share a real story, use your own words, and let your personality shine through. Authenticity wins votes.
Handle Nerves
Take 3 deep breaths before you walk up. Remember: those butterflies in your stomach are excitement, not fear. Your body is getting ready to perform at its best.
Speech Structures
Choose a framework that fits your style
★ The Persuader
▼Best for convincing your audience with clear logic and evidence.
- Hook: Start with a bold claim or question
- Problem: Identify what needs to change at school
- Solution: Present your 3 specific plans
- Evidence: Share why you are qualified (experience, skills)
- Call to action: Ask directly for their vote with confidence
📖 The Storyteller
▼Best for connecting emotionally and making your speech memorable.
- Personal story: Share a real moment that shaped who you are
- Lesson learned: What did that experience teach you about leadership?
- Vision: Paint a picture of what school could look like with you leading
- Your promises: Connect your story to your 3 goals
- Emotional close: End by tying back to your opening story
💡 Problem-Solution
▼Best for showing you understand real issues and have actionable plans.
- Problem #1: Name a specific challenge students face
- Your solution: Explain exactly how you will fix it
- Problem #2: Another issue that matters to classmates
- Your solution: A clear, realistic plan to address it
- Problem #3: One more area for improvement
- Your solution + close: Fix it, then rally for their vote
Practice Timer
Set a timer and rehearse delivering your speech out loud
Tip: Most campaign speeches are 1-2 minutes. Practice until you can deliver yours without reading.
