Our Mission

To build every scholar a learning experience shaped to them — and then hold all of them to the same high standard. The State of Texas tells us what every scholar must know. This studio treats that as the floor of the work, never the ceiling, and never as an excuse to teach thirty scholars as though they were one.

Our Vision

A studio where no scholar is ever stuck waiting for the class to catch up, and no scholar is ever quietly written off for arriving behind. Every scholar should leave able to rebuild what they learned from scratch — and able to say why it is true.

Dr. Ijezie-Desbois teaches mathematics and science at Beta Academy, where the classroom runs less like a lecture hall and more like a working studio. Scholars take an idea, draft it, test it, and refine it until they can defend the reasoning on their own. Encouragement is the baseline; precision is the standard. Everything published here — every foundations page, practice set, visualization, and pacing guide — was built for the scholars in these rooms first.

Nothing is assigned that hasn't been built

If scholars are expected to practice a skill, the practice exists here, free, and available the moment they need it — not behind a publisher login they'll never open at 9 p.m.

Proof: a Practice Gym that generates fresh problems rather than recycling the same twenty.

Every scholar gets a different road to the same standard

Arriving behind is a starting position, not a verdict. Every module carries a Foundations page that rebuilds the prerequisite skills first, so a gap is something a scholar can close instead of carry.

Proof: 41 modules across the library — and 41 Foundations pages. Every one, including the courses not currently taught.

The state's requirements are the floor

Every course is mapped to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, built on the TEA Bluebonnet Learning framework where it applies, and paced against the real school calendar — then taken further than the standard requires.

Proof: published syllabi and pacing guides tied to actual dates, not a generic week 1–36 grid.

If it can't be seen, it isn't understood

Abstraction is where scholars get lost. So concepts are built to be watched and manipulated — interactive visualizations, visual labs, and models a scholar can push on until the idea gives.

Proof: a visualization and a visual lab behind the modules, not a slide of static diagrams.

Tell the truth, including when it's inconvenient

Where real sources disagree, scholars are shown the disagreement rather than a tidied-up answer. Learning that experts contest a value is part of learning the science.

Proof: the studio's periodic table flags technetium's contested atomic mass (97 vs. 98) instead of quietly picking a side.

A scholar's privacy is not negotiable

Scholars work under aliases across every practice, game, and assessment surface in the studio. Nothing here is built to profile a child, and no scholar's data is ever sold or used for advertising.

Dr. Goodluck Ijezie-Desbois, PharmD

A pharmacist by training and a teacher by choice. That background sets the habit behind this whole studio: check the source, respect the standard, and never hand someone something you haven't verified. Scholars here are held to a real bar and given every tool needed to clear it.


Teaching Philosophy

Understanding is built, not handed over. Every lesson moves through the same four-stage cycle.

A scholar who only memorizes \(x = \dfrac{-b \pm \sqrt{b^2 - 4ac}}{2a}\) has a fact. A scholar who can say why the formula falls out of completing the square has a tool they can rebuild from scratch. This studio is built to grow the second kind of scholar — through reasoning, practice, reflection, and application, in that order, again and again.

Knowledge proves itself in new situations. Scholars transfer skills to fresh problems and the world beyond the page.

Mathematics

Mathematical Architects

In math, scholars are Mathematical Architects. They don't just solve problems — they design the structures behind them, reading the blueprint of a function and building the equations that describe change. Precision in notation, clarity in reasoning, and pride in a well-drafted solution are the marks of the work.

Science Ambassadors

In science, scholars are Science Ambassadors — investigators who can explain what they found and why it matters. That stance runs through the Earth Systems Science capstone for seniors and lives on in the 7th-grade science archive: observe carefully, argue from evidence, and communicate clearly enough that someone else can act on it.

The STEM Studio is organized as a Course Library: every course Dr. Ijezie-Desbois teaches gets its own home in the same consistent shape — an overview, a syllabus, and a pacing guide — so scholars and families always know where to look. New courses are added to the shelf as they're taught; finished ones stay on as living archives.

Beyond the Course Library sits The Scholar's Ascent — the home for guided practice and self-paced review. It's designed so a scholar can step out of a lesson and immediately put a new skill to work, with worked examples and checkpoints that mirror the studio's reason–practice–reflect–apply cycle.

In Use This Year

The Assessment Center

The Assessment Center is where checkpoints, STAAR-style practice, and progress views live. It shows growth over time rather than a single grade, so a scholar and their family can see which standards are secure and which still need work — while there is still time to do something about it.

Beta Academy leadership has approved the Assessment Center for internal classroom use, and it is a required part of this course. Because grades and standards evidence are recorded through it, there is no opt-out — the same expectation that applies to any other approved instructional platform.

Algebra I · Geometry · Earth Systems Science

Mathematics and the Science Capstone

2026–27

The courses taught this year. Algebra I and Geometry are built on the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills and the TEA Bluebonnet Learning — Secondary Mathematics framework, front-loaded toward the spring STAAR End-of-Course exam. Earth Systems Science is the senior capstone, rebuilt on a real 144-day calendar and anchored by project-based investigations. Mathematical Architects and Science Ambassadors under one roof.

The Wider Library

Built and Kept Open

Ongoing

Several courses were built out in full even though they are not on this year's teaching load — Algebra II, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, Physics, and AP Physics. They carry the same Foundations pages, practice, and visualizations as the taught courses, and they stay open for any scholar working ahead or reviewing something they met in another classroom.

7th Grade Science · Living Archive

The Science Ambassador Year

2025–26

A full year of 7th-grade science — forces and motion, matter and energy, electricity and chemistry, and the work of being a Science Ambassador. The course is complete, and its labs, games, and resources remain open as a living archive for scholars to revisit.
